Director Hopes To Make ‘Black Dawson’s Creek’

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash) – An up-and-coming film director says there’s never been a one-hour prime time drama devoted to African American teens, but she hopes to change that. Niva Dorell’s television directoral debut, What About Your Friends: Weekend Get-Away, airs tonight (May 31) on UPN and she hopes if people like it enough it will be picked up as a series. Dorell says the movie – which stars Keshia Knight Pulliam, “Rudy” from the Cosby Show – will appeal to African- American kids as a sort of “Black Dawson’s Creek.” The director admits she has no clue about the business side of turning the movie into a series, though she’s confident it will draw a large audience of black teens.
