First of all, the hook should work for everybody. I hear a lot of people complaining that it doesn't work and other people trying to explain to them to bind a key to +hook. Then it doesn't work.
The main problem that these people have is that they have not installed the mod. You MUST install the mod Weapons of Destruction (properly) for the hook (grapple) to work. The grapple is not coded into the mod the way it is in Lithium or CTF. The hook in WOD is used through an ALIAS (macro) that is written in the beginning of the autoexec.cfg file that comes with the mod. the command +hook is actually the name of the alias which you can see if you open the cfg file.
the alias is as follows:
alias +hook "hook action; wait; hook shrink"now you need to bind this alias to keys:
alias -hook "hook stop"
alias +shrink "hook shrink"
alias -shrink "hook stop"
alias +grow "hook grow"
alias -grow "hook stop"
bind kp_plus +hookWhen you download the mod, you are supposed to unzip everything into the directory
bind uparrow +shrink
bind downarrow +grow
This should put a file called autoexec.cfg in that directory. You should modify this file to bind all the keys you want to use for the various functions. you can also write your own aliases to select weapons on HOTKEYS like bind x "use napalm grenade;use bazooka" so you can select the napalm bazooka with one key.
Now I still see people who say they have the mod but the hook doesn't work. I have to assume that they do not have the mod installed properly. Please double check the directory that you have the mod installed into. Also check that you don't have multiple copies of Quake2 installed and you are using the wrong installation. If you still cant get it to work, and you've done everything, please email me because I want to see what is going on.
Ok now for the fun stuff.
CaptainVideo's Alternate hook binding #1
alias +trapeeze "hook action;hook shrink"This alias needs to be used in combination with the regular alias. Warning do not remove your original alias. keep a key bound to the original unless you really understand what you are doing.
alias -trapeeze "hook action;hook shrink"bind kp_enter +trapeeze
This alias I have been testing for about a week and it seems to work well. It allows you to use the hook in two new ways. When the alias is activated alone, and you are not already grappled onto something (i.e. you press this new key when you are not hanging from the wall/ceiling),---It makes the hook work more like the hook from Lithium (red laser style). You still have the swinging action, but you only remain connected to the wall until you release the key. The action is much more fluid, the release is quicker, and you can pull yourself up to a higher level while controlling your momentum and releasing while "in flight". I suspect that the difference is less pronounced with LPB's, but for HPB's like me, it really helps. The hook is very lag sensitive, and it seems that having to tap the hook key a second time to release never works right. This new alias releases quick enough for you to fire off a new line before you drop to the ground. I really hate those tarzan maniacs in Lithium and I hope that I am not causing the same problem in WOD, but I have decided to share whatever secrets I have found. If you find them useful please email me.
OK now for the other feature of this alias. If you use the alias while you are already hooked to a wall/ceiling. (i.e. you are hanging by using the original +hook alias--you are not hanging by holding down the key for the new alias) If you use this alias while hanging, it will release you and immediately fire a new hook line and pull you to the new connect point. The effect is that you can actually achieve the multiple hooks you need to get out of a deep pit or other precarious situation. Have you ever fallen down a crevasse with lava below you? Were you quick enough to hook the bottom of the ledge you fell off. Great, but now you are a sitting target. If you use the old +hook key, you have to hit it twice before you fall to your death. You may be able to do it if your ping is low enough (under 100?), but I could never get it to work (my ping is over 200 often over 300). But if you hit the trapeze alias, you will probably be able to achieve the maneuver. You may even be able to make two or three additional hooks without falling to the bottom.
Also notice that if you fire this alternate hook and miss the wall (shoot into air), the hook will refire on its own and shrink on its own as if you had fired again from the hanging position. You will then be stuck to the wall and will need to use the original key to release the hook.
Just a note: don't forget that you can swing while hanging. Your movement
keys affect your motion while hanging. So even if death is directly below
you, you may be able to get yourself swinging before releasing and fall
off to the side(maybe to a ledge or island-someplace safe) Don't forget
to bind a key to +grow. If you lengthen your rope you can get a bigger
swing going.
CaptainVideo's alternate hook binding #2:
alias multihk "hook action;hook action"This alias is also used in combination with the original +hook alias. Do not replace or delete you original +hook alias. This alias is used after first firing a line with the original alias, and you need the original alias to release the line.
bind enter multihk
Ok, this has got to be a bug, glitch, undocumented feature, whatever. It works in version 6.4 which is the latest as of April 99.
This alias does not have a lot of usefulness but maybe can help in certain unusual situations.
What's it do? Well, it lets you fire multiple hook lines and have them
remain attached at the same time. A little weird, not to be confused with
aliases to improve the killing ability of the hook. you can stand in the
middle of a courtyard, shoot a line up to a high wall on your right, turn
to your left and shoot another line to that wall, then use +shrink to shrink
both lines (+grow and +shrink will affect all lines simultaneously) and
you will be pulled up into the middle of he sky, dangling as if on a clothesline.
If you pull the lines very tight you will lose most control over your position,
kind of like you are on a rubber band. You may even bounce into a rock,
ceiling, wall etc. this can kill you. If you insist on pulling the lines
even tighter, you may experience what the medieval world knew as draw and
quartering. I doubt if I have spelled any of this right, but they used
to like to tie your arms and legs up to four different animals and see
how strong the ropes they had were. (The ropes didn't break, something
else did)
If you want to have some fun, go to q2dm1 and go into the main courtyard.
use the original +hook alias once. just hit the key once and release it
before you get pulled up. The line should remain attached to the wall
with you on the floor. Now point to a different spot on the wall across
from the first line. Then press the key for the multilnk alias. (normally
when you start a new hook line, the old line is disconnected) A new
line will fire into the wall leaving the old line intact. Pick a third
spot and fire the multilnk key again. (now you are attached with three
lines) use the +shrink key and you should be pulled up. hold the key and
you will probably be ripped apart.
Don't want to experience grapple death? Just tap the original hook
alias key (+hook) and all the lines will release.
I haven't figured out any good uses for this yet. there may be
some map where suspending yourself like a spider in a web is useful for
sniping but more often than not, you will just be flapping in the breeze
like some dirty laundry. If you find a good use, email
me.
