Utility Links

Most of these links will take you to the homepage for the maker of the software. I don't have the web space to post the files myself, nor do I have the bandwidth to upload that much stuff in this lifetime.

Getright:  a download utility that allows you to resume crashed downloads without starting from the beginning again. Works well with Netscape.

TimeLord: A cool little program that monitors when you connect to the net, (may not work automatically with aol) and synchronizes your PC clock with Greenwich mean time. You will always have the exact time down to the second right on your PC. Registration is free if you are a non commercial. user.

Freetel: An internet phone utility. Its free. It posts your current address to a server when activated (like icq, aim) so that you can receive calls from other freetel users. It is supposed to be supported by banner ads, but all I've seen so far are ads for Freetel itself. It works well. I talk to a friend in Florida from NY and there is only about a 1-2 second delay. Cut your long distance bill to zero.

Uncook: Ever download Mp3's? Ever get one that was scrambled? This utility can fix them. (zipped and mime uuc encoded)

SpeakFreely: Yet another free internet telephone program. It sort of combines the security features of PGPfone and the ease of Freetel but no advertisements.

PGP fone: Originally designed as a security scrambler, it works as an internet phone. I haven't tried it yet but its been around for a while. talk over the net with or without scrambling your transmissions. You never know who may be listening.

WinAmp: Don't know about Mp3 yet? Well you can convert CD music to a compressed format called Mp3, and a lot of people have. Songs are about 1meg/minute, So a typical song is 3-4 megs. There is a ton of stuff both copyrighted and non copyrighted available on the web. You will need a Player to listen to it though, so here it is. see Mp3.com and Scour.net for more downloads. I have "Louie Louie" posted here.

KeyGrip: A popular editing tool for Quake 2 Demos. You can change the camera angles like you are filming a movie. Very advanced an not well documented. If you know a bit about making films this may seem easy to you, but the average gamer may be overwhelmed. Note that it re-maps (binds) your keys and does not do it in a friendly way. You may have to fix things after you run this program.

GameSpy:          Simply the easiest way to play Quake 2 on the internet. It is a front end program that will poll servers and load your game with the proper config for the mod you want. If you don't know what it is, you probably have never played on the net before. Gamespy is now getting involved with Mp3 as well, so check out this site.

QSB Quake Scene Builder: Allows you to open the models in Quake II and pose them to take screenshots and make pictures for your own amusement. See my Quake page for an example.
