Misc.

Ms. Magazine has its own online message boards. I may never get off the Web again.

Why does the Oxford English Dictionary charge so much for the use of its online edition? An individual subscription is $550. You could buy the one-volume microprint edition for about half that price. Ditto the CD-ROM version. Admittedly, the latter two options won't give you the very latest updates, but still...

I wish they'd opt for a model in which they'd get less money from more users. I'd gladly pay fifteen bucks a year to get access. I'd go as far as twenty, even, but I'm not sure I could swing it beyond that. But there have got to be hundreds if not thousands of students and editors who'd be willing to shell out something in that range, but who can't afford half a grand.

Of course, I'm missing -- or willfully ignoring -- the real point here. I doubt the Oxford University Press people really expect too many people to buy individual subscriptions. Their real market consists of institutions -- libraries, colleges, that kind of thing -- who'll be buying licenses to cover all their users. They sell to fewer places, but rake in a lot more cash from each one. And they could hardly charge an extremely high price for an institutional site license if personal subscriptions were only fifteen bucks.

Still, I selfishly continue to feel that they're overlooking a potential market here.

If you ever want to keep tabs on somebody, just buy 'em a magazine subscription. As long as they update their address information when they move, you'll be told where they live when renewal time comes around.

Ya know, somebody probably ought to do something about that.

So I finally opened up the rabbit-ears atop my TV set and discovered that the antennae weren't actually attached to anything therein, the wires connecting them to the base having snapped. So I Scotch-taped everything together and closed it up again. How long this'll last, I don't know. I just wanna be able to see this week's new Angel episode...
