"If you had to sum up your reactions to the play in one word -- from the time you first heard about it, to after you saw it -- what would it be?" <long pause> "Cool." |
Tuesday, February 15, 2000 Switching Classes, and an Interview In hindsight, taking that American Studies job might not have been one of my brighter ideas. Then again, I originally accepted it before I got that student loan, at which point it was a very bright idea indeed. And I probably still don't have any right to complain. But the fact remains that I'm really behind on the hours I'm supposed to have been putting in, and I'm supposed to be showing at least a rough prototype of the site by tomorrow, and I don't got nothin' yet. Maybe if I run away for a few weeks, it'll all blow over...
Today was generally nice, even if it didn't quite go the way I'd expected it to. I got to the campus just in time for the British Literature II class, which was actually pretty nice. A bit more laid-back than I'd expected, but with a pretty darn good class dynamic, which definitely makes a difference. Part of this was clearly due to the presence of a classmate I'd previously had a class with six semesters back, who was highly active in that class also. She'll be giving me the notes from the classes I've missed, so that much is well with the world. From there to Professor J's office, where he attempted to officially switch my classes over, trading in Urban Studies for English, but it didn't quite work. Which is to say that, officially, I dropped the first course (regaining a fraction of the tuition paid for it), and then added the second (at the full price), rather than simply trading them in. An attempt to rectify this just made matters worse. He then tried calling the Registrar's office, but they closed early today. So he'll be calling them first thing tomorrow (or, more likely, when I come to remind him to do it), and, hopefully, we'll get this straightened out. From there to the English Department office to change my hours, and thence to the bus stop, so I could go to Columbia University for that interview. In hindsight, there was a faster route I could have taken, if I'd thought of it; I'll know for next time, I guess. And I initially missed my stop and had to double back a bit... but, anyway, I arrived about 3:45, roughly a quarter-hour late, but the interviewer -- a graduate student, it turned out -- was still there, so all was well. We repaired to a nearby deli for the interview. The interview itself was a very pleasant conversation, especially as we turned out to have overlapping interests and fields of study. Granted, it was a rather lopsided conversation, but it was an interview, so I suppose there was no way around that. The main focus was my reactions to The Vagina Monologues, and its value, male reactions to it in general, and so on, but, not surprisingly, we rambled through tangent after tangent, all related to the overall theme, much of it filling in the background to my reactions. We probably could've spent weeks without running out of issues to explore, but we inevitably had to stop somewhere. We ended up stopping around 6:40 PM, a fact we discovered as we were walking out the door, neither of us having brought a watch. Considering that I'd planned to be back at Queens College at 6:00, you might say it went on a bit longer than I'd expected. I did feel bad in that I'd promised to be at QC, and was expected there... but I can still evaluate the journal submissions some other time, so it's not really a big deal. And, to be honest, the interview was more interesting.
Anyway, I arrived on campus at about 8:00, determined within the next ten minutes or so that I'd missed the meeting, called Phebe and confirmed that, and then went home, arriving halfway through Buffy. At which point I discovered that while I'd put the antenna in the correct position, and while I'd set the VCR timer properly, I'd forgotten to turn the VCR off, so it wasn't recording anything. Oops. Oh, well. I'll get the tape somehow. And the last half was pretty good, anyway.
My column for the college paper hasn't been written yet, either. Have I mentioned that self-discipline isn't my strong point? And that I have a tendency to commit to too many projects? Or have y'all figured that out by now?
