Men are only sex toys / Only women's sex toys / Men are only sex toys / That's all they are. --from "Sex Toys," by Lust Pollution 29 days until my birthday! |
Sunday, April 11, 1999 Bridging the Gap VIII: Mix I've been listening to the mix tapes Kymm sent me, and have had to add a few more CDs to the list of albums I've going to buy once I win the lottery, while moving a couple more higher on that list. I'd already been passingly familiar with Christine Lavin, for instance, but hearing more of her stuff has just become a much higher priority. Ditto Four Bitchin' Babes, of which Christine is, or was, a member. It was nice hearing a Sinead O'Connor song other than that stupid, overplayed "Nothing Compares 2 U," for that matter... And then there's Liz Phair. On the third listen, I finally paid attention to the lyrics in "Flower." Wow. I suddenly realized that I had read them before, just over a year ago, when I was revising my essay on the F-word, but I'd never actually heard the song. It makes a difference. The dissonance between the music (which is sweet, flowery, and reminiscent of a music box), and the actual lyrics being sung... like I said, wow. But the real discovery was Lust Pollution. I found myself wanting to know how I'd managed to avoid finding out about them until now. Then I checked out a few web sites and discovered that none of the major outlets seemed to know their album existed, and the question shifted to how Kymm had found them. Very interesting stuff, largely about sex, which can be taken in any number of ways. Using the source of today's quote as an example, is "Sex Toys" misandrist, misogynist, feminist, anti-feminist, all, or none? A case can be made for any of those options. Either way, it makes you think, which is a Good Thing [tm].
As an aside, my tapes are still available, should anybody else be interested in trading. There are four (the fifth -- actually the first -- wasn't planned very well, was devoted primarily to one artist, and has been scrapped; I'll be making a few minor substitutions in the other four as a result): "Diverse Dementia," "I've Run Out of Alliterative Titles," "'Slower Songs' and 'Faster Songs,'" and "'Sleepytime' and 'The Attic.'" The titles are not necessarily well-chosen; neither are the actual tracks selected. Anyway, this offer ends soon, so act now. |
