Overdue Books and Course Selections

Just before Passover, I took The BFG, by Roald Dahl, out from the college library. I'd read it years ago, but was uncertain of whether my sister had. It turns out that she had, but some of my other siblings hadn't, I think.

At any rate, I accidentally left it back in Far Rockaway when I went back for the first few days of Passover.

I discovered this just over a week ago, when I tried taking out a stack of books on erotica in the cinema (or, okay, sex in movies), and was told that I couldn't take any more books out until I returned that one.

The ensuing week has featured a series of increasingly desparate pleas directed at my siblings, to give The BFG to another student at my college, who lives across the street from my family, and have him return it ASAP. On Thursday night, they finally did so. As of Friday afternoon, the library hadn't gotten it.

One result of this is that I now have two more overdue books -- Feminism Unmodified, by Catharine MacKinnon, and Letters from a War Zone, by Andrea Dworkin -- which were due on Friday. I returned the other five I had out, but I still need these, and I'm just going to have to wait until I can renew them.

Another result is that I'm in trouble, come Wednesday. 'Cause I have a paper due then on King Lear and Dr. Faustus, which I haven't been able to properly research yet.

See, my research methods generally consist of taking out a dozen or so books on whatever it is I'm interested in, and vacuuming them all down at about three in the morning. My subconscious then gets to play around with all of the pieces of the puzzle, which I then put together at deadline.

Under the circumstances, this is going to be one heck of a challenge. And if my card isn't usable again by Monday, it just might turn out to be impossible.

I'm currently signed up for fifteen credits for the fall semester, of which I'm almost certainly going to drop three. After the last couple of semesters, though, I'm making sure to leave myself room to do so, as antisocial as that might be.

At any rate, the lineup currently consists of:

  • English 255: 20th Century Literature
  • English 304: Poetry Workshop
  • Women's Studies 101: Introduction to Women's Studies
  • Women's Studies 201: Theories of Feminism
  • Anthropology 203: Human Sexuality

There's still a chance that I might replace English 255 with English 252: British Literature II, although I doubt that, at this point. I'm going to need both eventually anyway, for my English major.

I don't, technically speaking, need English 304 at all; I'm pretty sure I already have more than enough English electives. But I've wanted to take this particular course/instructor combination for some time.

The other three all fall under the heading of Women's Studies, which I am very seriously considering minoring in. I figure I'll give 101 and 201 a try, at least, and see what happens. It's certainly worth a shot. The only bit that really worries me is that a one-semester (90 hr.) internship is a requirement for the minor, and I'm not sure I'll ever have the time for that... but if it's on campus, it just might be possible.

Anthropology 203 is the most likely to be dropped, largely due to scheduling concerns; it ends at 3:50 PM on Fridays, and sundown is at 4:10 PM at its high point. Which means that if I find a way of paying the rent here, and I keep this course, I'll be able to just barely make it home in time, provided that I forget about actually preparing any hot food for Friday night. But we'll see.

Summer courses are, alas, out, I think. I can't see how I could afford them.

I have a few minor changes in the rigging of this site planned, one of which takes effect today. From this entry onward, the "Archives" link at the bottom will take you to the monthly listing, rather than the giant calendar. Saves on loading time, and it's probably more useful anyway.

If you prefer it the old way, or have any other comments or suggestions, please feel free to let me know.
