Skip, skip, skip to my lou... |
Sunday, May 23, 1999 Catching Up Looks like I'm skipping another week's worth of entries. This is getting to be a habit... Oh, well. Briefly, then, here's what's been happening: Monday, May 17, 1999 Had my penultimate session with my counselor, as scheduled. Went to the computer lab not long after that, where I checked my e-mail and got the Israeli election results. Had a few things to say about the latter here, but didn't get around to typing them up. Tuesday, May 18, 1999 Second of three class sessions on feminist views of porn. Given the absence of a strong pro-porn argument in our assigned readings, I ended up reading Mary Anne's Introduction to Torn Shapes of Desire towards the end of the period, which served the purpose admirably. Napped a bit in the evening, as I really had to finish that essay on Lear and Faustus the next day. Wednesday, May 19, 1999 Returned to said essay really late Tuesday night, then took another nap not long after sunrise, if I recall correctly. Went to the Mac lab in college and continued typing away. Took a break at 3:55 PM, of necessity, as a friend (a graduating dual major in English and Women's Studies) had invited me to the Women's Studies graduation reception, which was in a nearby building on campus at 4:00, and I had promised to attend. Stayed for the ceremony, which was fairly brief as ceremonies go, ending about forty minutes later. Congratulated her, and regretfully declined her offer to introduce me to several people I'd have liked to have been introduced to, as I had a paper to finish. Returned to the computer lab, continued typing. Class was at 6:30. At 6:00, it was clear that I wasn't going to make it unless I got really sloppy at the end. I decided it would be better to get it right, or as close to that as possible. Continued typing. Printed out another draft in three columns and 5-point type, as is my usual practice, and revised it. Got done shortly after 8:00 PM. The paper wasn't remotely up to what I'd envisioned, but at least it was done. Went to class. At end of class, handed in paper. Went home, drained. Went to sleep. Thursday, May 20, 1999 Third and last "Feminism and Porn" class. Took apart MacKinnon, which wasn't unpleasant. :-) Sentence fragments are beginning to wear on me. Will return to using complete sentences, I think. :-) So, I returned to my apartment, grabbed some lunch (peanut butter on pita, most likely), and collected all of the artwork I'd done for my 2-D Design class all semester. I touched up two paintings, let them dry, and then schlepped the whole works back to college, picking up one last painting from a professor's office on the way to the classroom, where I went to have 'em graded, as my final. I spread out all my work, the professor looked it over, and, rather to my amazement, he finished his analysis with "Well, I think you've been an 'A' student." My response was a slightly incredulous "Really?!" I was expecting something in the neighborhood of a "B". Maybe a "B+" or a "B-". In my dreams, maybe an "A-", but I'd figured that would be pushing it. I'm still a bit stunned. Happily so, though. Anyway. I zipped back to my apartment, where my brother was waiting for me. I packed up the stuff I'd need for the next couple of days, and he drove us back to Far Rockaway, as the two-day holiday of Shavous started that night. I managed to put up a really short note on the main page of the Soapbox just before sundown. Friday, May 21, 1999 I did a lot of sleeping. Saturday, May 22, 1999 I got some more sleep. And I visited my paternal grandparents -- who were visiting my cousins, in the area -- after which I visited a friend, whom I hadn't seen in months. And after the holiday ended, I raided the cabinets for food, glorious food, and my brother drove me back to my apartment. Sunday, May 23, 1999 Well, I didn't manage to write seven Soapbox entries. Nor did I do all that much with regard to my schoolwork. Alas.
Coming up this week: Monday evening: A friend's wedding. Wednesday evening: British Literature I final, 50% of which is a 500-word essay on Paradise Lost, to be handed in at the start of the final. Thursday morning: My nephew's circumcision. (He's home from the hospital). Thursday afternoon: Collaborative essay on porn and feminism due. Updating just might turn out to be erratic this week, as I need to write those essays and study for that final. I'm sorry about that. The annoying thing is that I have plenty to say about all of this. Just not enough time to do it properly. Ah, but after finals... after finals, we'll talk.
