Buffy: (silence) Giles: (silence) Buffy: (silence) Giles: (silence) |
Thursday, November 2, 2000 Catching Up The problem with getting behind in one's journal, as I'm pretty sure I've mentioned before, as that one ends up with an ever-increasing backlog of things to write about. Which gets more and more daunting, causing you to put off updating until you have a chance to do it properly, which increases the backlog, which... It's a lot like my life in general.
Let's try to zip through the past couple of weeks, then, at least hitting on the highlights. I spent the end of the holidays in Far Rockaway, by my brother. 'Twas okay. Along the way, I spoke to an old friend for the first time in a while and got filled in on Dungeons and Dragons: Third Edition. Apparently, this is meant to supercede previous versions of both D&D and AD&D. I only had the chance to read through a promotional booklet explaining how to convert older characters to the new system, but it looks intriguing. Based on what my friend said about it, they may have done the job properly this time around. (AD&D 2nd Edition was an utterly wasted opportunity, if you ask me.) Not that I've played in years, and I'm not at all sorry that my role-playing game days are behind me. Still, it's nice to keep up with the news...
Around the start of last week (circa the 22nd, that is), my left eye started feeling a bit irritated. I didn't think it was a problem at first -- such a feeling isn't uncommon -- but it got worse, and by late Monday night it was pretty clear that something was wrong, and that I had to see an eye doctor ASAP. Complicating the matter was that the Fulbright application also needed to be done on Tuesday. And that (as I belatedly remembered Monday night) I had a drama midterm on Tuesday. Isn't convergence great? To make a long story shorter: I got an eye doctor appointment for 5:30 PM Tuesday (after first being told that he was booked solid, but then I explained the situation). I hit the campus about 1:50 PM, with just enough time to swing by Honors and Scholarships and agree to return before 4:00. Went to my 2:00 drama class, took the half-period midterm, explained to the professor about the deadline and the doctor appointment, and ran back to Honors and Scholarships. Typed up, photocopied, and signed all the relevant Fulbright stuff, getting done shortly after 5:00. Ran out and down the block, where my brother was waiting for me in his car. Was driven to the eye doctor, getting stuck in traffic along the way, so we arrived at 6:00. As I'd expected, it turned out that one of my eyelashes had decided to grow in the wrong way. The eye doctor plucked it out, and fixed my glasses in the bargain. (Did I mention that I'd accidentally sat on them the previous Thursday? Well, I did, bending one hinge a bit out of shape.) Anyway, I took the railroad home and made it back in time for Buffy. It took the rest of the week for my eye to heal, requiring me to buy a hella expensive bottle of Visine at the college bookstore on Thursday, but at least the stuff worked well...
The depressing bit is that the half period I missed in drama was devoted to discussion of the campus production of Salome, with its director right there. I'd have loved to have been able to ask her a question or two... I also didn't do my art homework (a self-portrait) again, partly because my art supplies were all-too-securely locked in the computer lab, but also because, the way my eye was, I wasn't really up to it. I did start a self-portrait in class, though, and while it's definitely unfinished, you can actually tell that it's intended to represent me!
Of course, the Yankee cap in the painting helps. Speaking of which, there's a highlight right there: The Yankees won the World Series! And while I've managed to get some quality gloating time in with a couple of my Met-fan siblings, I still have a couple more left to speak to. Man, I've been looking forward to this. Of course, the torments suffered by Met fans in this series are nothing compared to those of Boston Red Sox fans, most of whom found the choices for baseball's World Champion even less appealing than most of us find the two primary choices for President of the United States. Lesser of the two evils, indeed. Needless to say, I rather enjoyed knowing that also. Sorry, Miriam.
Skipping out of the narrative for now... I never had any contact with Ginkgo, and I never read her journal, but I knew of her from mentions in many other journals; she had a really good reputation as an artist and designer. Not to mention as the founder of Journal-L, although she'd turned it over to somebody else by the time I joined it. She's gone now, and my heart goes out to those who knew her.
There's more to catch up on, but I've gotta go to sleep. Stuff I still need to get to includes: the results of a couple of tests, my visit to the museum, my inability to get anywhere on time, my Snood song, and the Saga of the Jeans. Stay tuned... Oh, and a belated happy birthday to Jen! |
